MARKIII-RUST is a PVE server at heart, but that doesn't mean there's no room for combat. Drone Battles is our custom aerial combat system that lets players fight each other through remote-controlled armed drones — all without risking your base, your gear, or your loot.
It's one of the most popular features on the server, and this guide will get you from zero to dogfighting in minutes.
How Drone Battles Work
The concept is straightforward. You take a standard Rust delivery drone, equip it with weapon attachments, and enter a dedicated combat arena. Inside the arena, your drone fights other players' drones in real-time. Your actual character stays safe — if your drone is destroyed, you just lose the drone and its attachments, not your inventory.
This makes it the perfect PVP outlet for a PVE server. You get the adrenaline of combat without the frustration of losing hours of farming progress.
Step 1: Obtain a delivery drone (craft it, buy it, or find one in loot)
Step 2: Equip at least one weapon attachment to your drone
Step 3: Type /dronebattle in chat to queue for a match
Step 4: When enough players queue, the arena opens and the battle begins
Drone Weapon Attachments
The weapon system is where strategy comes in. Different attachments suit different playstyles, and choosing the right loadout can make the difference between dominating the arena and being shot down in seconds.
| Attachment | Type | Strengths | Weaknesses |
|---|---|---|---|
| Auto Turret | Automatic fire | Consistent DPS, good tracking | Heavy, reduces speed |
| Shotgun Trap | Close range burst | Devastating at close range | Useless at distance |
| Flame Turret | Area denial | Damage over time, area effect | Short range, fuel cost |
| SAM Launcher | Heavy ordnance | Huge burst damage | Slow reload, expensive ammo |
Arena Modes
Drone Battles runs on a rotation of different arena modes throughout the wipe. Each mode changes the rules and rewards, keeping things fresh.
Free-for-All
The classic mode. Every drone for itself. Last drone flying wins. Simple, chaotic, and always entertaining. This is the default mode and runs most frequently.
Team Battle
Players are split into two teams. Coordinate with your squad to take down the opposing team's drones. Communication is key — use proximity chat or Discord to call out targets.
King of the Hill
A capture zone spawns in the arena. Hold the zone with your drone to score points. The team or player with the most points when the timer runs out wins. This mode rewards both combat skill and positioning.
Boss Hunt (Co-op)
All players team up against a massively overpowered NPC boss drone. This isn't PVP — it's PVE drone combat at its finest. The boss has phases with different attack patterns, and the loot for taking it down is exceptional.
Rewards
Winning drone battles earns you a mix of rewards depending on the mode and your performance. Consistent top performers also climb the weekly leaderboard, which resets at each bi-weekly wipe.
Match Rewards: Server reward points, scrap, and a chance at Havoc components
Weekly Leaderboard: Top 3 players earn bonus VIP time, exclusive drone skins, and a special chat title
Boss Hunt: Havoc components (guaranteed), rare blueprints, and unique cosmetics
Tips for Winning
Altitude is your best friend. Drones that stay high have better visibility and can dive on targets. Players who hug the ground are easier to ambush from above.
Don't overload your drone with heavy attachments. A fast drone with one good weapon will often outperform a slow drone with three. Mobility and positioning win more fights than raw firepower.
Practice your flight controls in the open world first. Take a drone out and fly it around the map until the controls feel natural. The arena is not the place to learn how to fly — you'll be shot down before you figure out how to turn.
Watch the leaderboard players. Many of them stream or post clips in the Discord. Studying how top players position and engage will teach you more than any guide can.
