Vanilla Rust treats every player the same — everyone farms, everyone builds, everyone fights. On MARKIII-RUST, the Professions system lets you specialise. Pick a career path, level it up through gameplay, and unlock perks that make you genuinely better at the things you enjoy doing most.
It's one of those features that fundamentally changes how you play. Instead of being a jack of all trades, you become a specialist — and the server's economy naturally develops around players trading their strengths.

How Levelling Works
Your profession gains XP every time you perform its core activity. Miners earn XP by mining nodes, Hunters earn XP by killing NPCs, Farmers earn XP from harvesting crops, and so on. The system is entirely passive — just play the game doing what your profession specialises in and you'll level up naturally.
Each profession has 20 levels. The first few levels come quickly to give you an immediate taste of the perks, then the curve steepens as you approach the higher tiers. Reaching level 20 in any profession is a significant achievement and unlocks the most powerful perks.
Level 1–5: Basic perks — small gathering bonuses, minor stat increases
Level 6–10: Intermediate perks — noticeable gameplay improvements, efficiency gains
Level 11–15: Advanced perks — significant bonuses that change your approach to content
Level 16–20: Master perks — powerful unique abilities, profession-exclusive tools or effects
Choosing Your First Profession
When you first join the server, type /profession in chat to open the profession selection menu. You'll see all available paths with descriptions of their perks at each tier.
If you're not sure what to pick, consider how you naturally play Rust. If you spend most of your time running monuments and hitting barrels, Scavenger is your best fit. If you love building massive bases, Lumberjack or Miner will accelerate your resource gathering enormously. If you're always the one charging into raidable bases, Hunter gives you a direct combat advantage.
Can I Switch?
Yes — use /profession again to switch at any time. The catch is that switching resets your progress in the profession you're leaving. This is intentional: it creates a meaningful choice. You can absolutely try different professions across wipes to find your favourite, but within a single wipe you're rewarded for committing to one path.
Profession Synergies
Professions are designed to complement each other in groups. A team with a Hunter, a Miner, and a Medic will outperform a team of three generalists at almost any content on the server.
The Hunter deals more damage to NPCs in raidable bases while the Medic keeps the team alive with enhanced healing. Meanwhile the Miner farms resources between raids at boosted rates, keeping the team supplied with explosives and building materials. Each player contributes something the others can't match on their own.
This dynamic is one of the things that makes MARKIII-RUST's community so active. Players naturally form groups based on complementary professions, which leads to more social gameplay and stronger team bonds.
Tips for Levelling Fast
Focus on your profession's core activity in bulk sessions. Miners should farm entire ore fields rather than grabbing a node here and there. Hunters should chain raidable bases back to back. Concentrated activity earns XP faster because you avoid downtime.
VIP packages include profession XP boosts. If you're serious about hitting level 20, the boost stacks with your natural XP gain and can cut levelling time significantly. Check the store for current VIP tiers.
Some server events reward profession XP as prizes. Keep an eye on event announcements in Discord — participating in the right events can give your profession a significant boost.
